John Meloche is the founder of Melodic Creative and currently Lead Baseball Systems Developer for the Toronto Blue Jays.

As of 2019, I'm is not accepting new clients, but keeping this site as a place to share the projects I'm proud of and passionate about. In the long term, this space will act as a better showcase for some of the 120+ websites I worked on and a selection of book layouts, album artwork, and print projects I was fortunate to be a part of.

To the people, teams, and companies I've worked with since 2007, thank you for all the great projects and for continuing to throw new challenges at me with each and every project. You pushed me to grow and constantly find new solutions and new technologies to achieve what you needed. It's been magic.

Project Description

When Jill & Ruth saw their business rapidly expand from offering Workshops and Courses locally to a packed schedule around North America, they found themselves spending too much time devoted to course registrations, building attendance lists, and processing payments manually.

After trying to hire help to no avail, they turned to automation.

Project Scope

Create a website to showcase their Leadership Courses and promote exciting locations in luxury venues around the world, with a backend that would act as a super efficient Adminstrative Assistant. They simply had to schedule a date, and let their website do the rest.

From the site, users can register and pay for a course, instantly receive a receipt with details about their upcoming event. In the backend, Jill and Ruth can see which courses are filling up, pull attendance lists on course day, and generate sales reports for accounting.

Key Features

  • Create Leadership Courses and set details
  • Create templates of recurring events in same cities and venues
  • Set attendance limits, course costs, and discounts for each event
  • Events automatically change status to "Limited Seats" and "Sold Out" based on sales vs capacity
  • Track sales to Courses and pull Attendance Lists prior to events
  • Pull Sales Reports for accounting

Project Description

We teamed up with Channel 13 Design as the development team for a large scale project for Red Tag Vacations.

The task was to rebrand an existing company as a Luxury travel brand targeting Villas in Exotic Locations. The Channel 13 team was responsible for design and content sourcing, while it was up to us to see their vision through to completion.

The largest task was building a system where the Red Tag staff could easily add, update, and manage Villas and their constantly changing Rates. We did this with a brand new Content Management System, built completely from scratch to meet their specific needs.

Project Description

One of the best parts of working on a band websites is that their site can be more focused on creating an artistic experience that represents the band, since their music has so many platforms with Spotify, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and who knows, maybe even TikTok.

When Hot Water Music celebrated their 25th Anniversary, I got the chance to work with them directly, pouring through years of tour posters and old photos to create an aesthetic that would feel like the DIY basement flyers of the 90's and add layers of speckles and grit throughout the site.

This project is possibly one of my favourites to date, as they let me run wild with the concept. In the few years since the anniversary passed, the site is no longer live, but a showcase version is up here

Project Description

When Luke from Protest The Hero wanted me to make a guitar tab book for their band's record Fortress in 2010, I had no idea how far it would go.

One book turned into two, which turned to five.. and fast forward to today, I've designed over 200 books for artists on the ever growing Sheet Happens roster.

In 2012, I initially developed a custom e-commerce website for SH when they only had 4 books in the catalogue. Their catalogue would go on to outgrow our original vision and in 2018, it was time for a complete overhaul. We took a step back, assessed the biggest pain points and planned out the best way to showcase their products, while providing powerful features for Luke to manage his orders and royalties.

Backend Features:

  • Bulk edit prices, sales, and stock counts
  • Track expenses and revenues for each release
  • Automatically generate Quarterly Royalty Reports and Manage Payouts to each Artist
  • Manage customer orders
  • Sort Orders into named Shipping Queues
  • Generate Shipping Lists for Grouped Orders
  • Pull Sales Reports by Artist, Catalogue Item, and Date Range
  • Create Promo Codes and run sales targeted on specific products and artists

Project Description

In late 2016, a client I had worked extensively with approached me for a vinyl brokerage he was opening. As we talked through the website features and the overall potential of the business, we were both full of ideas and excitement, and ended up partnering to create Merchant Vinyl.

Through our experiences playing in bands, we knew that vinyl was both expensive and extremely complicated to produce. Our goal was to take the complexity and create a company that made the process easy and accessible, and through automating processes and keeping expenses low, we hoped to lower the cost to the buyer and make vinyl accessible to smaller artists.

I spent the following months branding Merchant Vinyl. Initially creating a MVP that could serve as a site where new customers could submit their order information for quotes, and get their artwork templates and forms needed for submission.

Custom Quoting System

The biggest challenge we found was how to quote each order. There were endless combinations of record colours, packaging types, paper stocks, and other small details. Our supplier's pricing system had thousands of variations all with different conditions. Due to the complexity, we had to email our supplier for each quote, who in turn crunched the numbers and generated a quote, usually meaning days of delay.

There had to be a better way?!. Over a few weeks, using PHP, MySQL, Ajax, and thousands of lines of conditional code, I developed a system that took all quote parameters into account, and instantly generated the cost, recommended a price and profit margin, and when finalized, genearted a branded PDF with a quote and price breakdown. Now when a user submitted a quote, we had it back to them almost instantly.

This turned a process that took days into one that took minutes, and we were able to properly track all incoming quotes for proper followups.

Download Codes

Another inital headache we had was paying for digital downloads that come with the records, and then paying to host them. Within a week, I developed a system where we could upload music, artwork, and select how many codes we'd like to generate. Cards would be included with each record, and then could be redeemed on an area of the website, with trackable analystics on how many were redeemed.

Project Description

After a few years of running an up and coming music festival, the Six Shooter Records team found themselves spending countless hours on manual transactions and shipping out printed tickets to thousands of festival-goers.

In 2015, they came to us for a re-designed and completely custom E-Commerce website where they could sell their music, both physically and digitally, and most importantly, sell tickets digitally for their festivals. These tickets would need to be generated on checkout, delivered as a PDF by email to the customer, and then be able to scan those through mobile devices at the events.

Through their backend, the SS team can:

  • Manage their catalogue
  • Create and Manage Tickets
  • Download Attendance Lists for Events
  • Create and Manage User Accounts
  • Manage customer orders
  • Pull Sales Reports by Artist, Catalogue Item, and Date Range
  • Create Promo Codes and run sales targeted on specific products and artists
  • Users can access their Order History and Downloads

Project Description

I was told planning a wedding was a lot of work, but you don't really understand until you do it for yourself — and then decide to design everything yourself. Whoops!

It started with invitations, and before I knew it, I was designing motel keychains and matchbooks, a welcome sign, table decorations and on and on. This was incredibly outside my comfort zone, but I thrive on that discomfort and was so proud with the outcome (as was my beautiful bride!)

Photos to come!

But wait, there's more...
